A FODMAP diet is a 3 step diet used to help manage the symptoms of medically diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a very common gut problem with symptoms including abdominal (tummy) pain, bloating, wind (farting) and changes in bowel habit (diarrhea, constipation or both).

The aims of the diet in our consultation is to:

  • Learn which foods and FODMAPs you tolerate, and which trigger your IBS symptoms.

  • Assess whether your IBS symptoms are sensitive to FODMAPs.

The 3-step process would be as follow:

  1. Low-FODMAP diet: Follow a low FODMAP diet by swapping high FODMAP foods for low FODMAP alternatives.

  2. FODMAP Reintroduction Diet: A low FODMAP diet continued. Food challenges (using foods high in only 1 FODMAP group) are used to determine which FODMAPs are tolerated, and which are not.

  3. FODMAP Personalization Diet: Well tolerated FODMAPs are included, while poorly tolerated FODMAPs restricted, but only to a level that provides adequate symptom relief.

If a medical doctor has not diagnosed your gastrointestinal symptoms, you should not be following this diet. There are many conditions with symptoms that are similar to IBS, such as coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, endometriosis and bowel cancer. You should not self-diagnose yourself with IBS. Instead, see a medical doctor who will assess your symptoms, run any tests needed to rule out other conditions and give you a clear diagnosis of IBS before you start this diet.
